Innovative medtech company Getinge was looking for a striking feature for its reception area at its new global headquarters in Derby.

Its new building was modern and innovative, in keeping with Getinge’s brand, and the team wanted to introduce more elements of biophilia into the lobby to enhance the well-being and health of those working in or visiting the building.

The team at phs Greenleaf proposed an impressive statement living wall to add a flood of greenery and texture that would soften the space and create a calm and welcoming environment.

Stephen Dieppe, Managing Director for phs Greenleaf, said: “As a forward-thinking and innovative company, Getinge understands the importance of plants and nature in an environment and the benefits of investing in biophilic design.”

Biophilia is the concept that human beings have an innate connection to nature. Being with plants and nature is proven to make us feel calmer, happier and safer. Biophilic design taps into this psychology and uses plants and natural materials to create the same feelings.

For example, attractive, thriving plants in a premise gives the impression of a clean, healthy, natural environment – somewhere that people can thrive too - and this reassures and comforts visitors.

Stephen Dieppe continued: “The space in the Getinge lobby was a challenging space to work with, but we had a clear vision. The large wall earmarked for the living wall was broken up by a staircase and so the living wall had to be designed in four different parts to give the illusion of one large living wall in which the staircase ‘floated’ through.

“We carefully selected plants that we knew would thrive in the reception and provide the greatest health benefits. As well as absorbing sound, which is important in a large lobby area, they remove up to 87% of air toxins within 24 hours providing naturally cleaner, healthier air.

“Above the stairs, the two sections of the living wall measured 4m x 1.8m and 4m x 2.3m. Below the stairs, the two corresponding sections of the living wall measured 4m x 4m and 4m x 3m. The team also designed four different water points to ensure the wall was properly irrigated to keep the plants looking their best.”

phs Greenleaf also installed plants in a series of wooden troughs to break up spaces in the building, using greenery and tall planters with Ficus to fill the empty window spaces in reception, creating a striking first impression as you arrived outside the building.

The team at Getinge were thrilled with the results, which showcased their modern and innovative ethos, whilst introducing a sense of calm and well-being into an otherwise industrial setting.

phs Greenleaf is harnessing the power of nature and creating built environments that positively influence the people using them - improving well-being, productivity and even sales.

phs Greenleaf provides indoor and outdoor plants, artificial and live planting, living walls, grounds maintenance and Christmas trees and decorations to businesses across the UK.
